Remembering 9/11… Stay with the Fight!
I’m coming to you from New York City today. Our kids are off school this week and we are spending a few days taking in NYC and then will be headed to Rhode Island tomorrow to visit my parents.
Yesterday we visited the 9/11 memorial. Years ago I used to commute through the World Trade Center. I clearly remember that horrible day when our country was attacked. I was living in Southern California at the time. My daughter was only 6 months old and my son was 2 years old. My older brother was working in the World Financial Center, across from the World Trade Center, at the time. I got the call from my Mom saying they hadn’t heard from him yet. He did make it safely back to NJ after about 8 hours. However, he has horrible memories of that day. He and his co-workers witnessed the planes hitting the World Trader Center from their offices. They feared their building would be next. Luckily they were fine, but so many lives were lost that day.
Visiting the 9/11 memorial brings back all those scary images and feelings. I am thankful for my life, family and health. Whenever a tragedy like this occurs or when I get news of friend or loved one who is ill, which just happened again last week, I reflect on my health and life. There are no guarantees, but yet I know living a healthy and active life is worth it. I do believe being in good physical shape and eating a healthy diet will help me fight any tragedy, whether it be an accident or stricken with an illness or disease.
When you are not motivated to workout or watch your diet, I encourage you to remember loved ones who have battled tragedy. Being physically fit and following a healthy diet will give you a step up on the fight. As Rach, Les Mills Combat trainer, says, “Stay with the fight” and “Be stronger than you ever imagined.” Yes, being fit and having a healthy diet will help you stay with the fight and you will then realize how strong you really are.
This brings me to eating healthy and exercising. It needs to become part of your lifestyle. It’s something you do and you don’t question it. Sure, a vacation is a great time to take a break and treat yourself. I believe in a balance and moderation. When we go on vacation my husband and I try to get some exercise in a couple of the days. The workouts aren’t usually as intense and we will take a few days off.
This week we will hit the gym in the hotel for a few short workouts. It’s also a great time to switch up your routine with different machines in the hotel gym. When we get to my parents house we will workout a few days to the Les Mills Combat program. We can easily pop a DVD into their player and do a few of the workouts that don’t require any equipment.
As for eating, yes we are enjoying some of the nice restaurants in NYC (we are big foodies) as well as treating the kids to some NY style pizza and famous bagels. Call me a nut, but I do bring my mini portable blender with me on trips and I drink my Shakeology everyday. It’s a super healthy way to start the day or great for lunch. It helps balance out the extra calorie and goodies we have while enjoying our vacation.
By exercising and not going too crazy with our diets while on vacation, it’s much easier to get back into the routine when we get home. Follow me on Instagram, kathrynwong, or on Facebook for more pictures of our trip.
Come March 1st, I have a new Les Mills Combat Challenge Group starting. I only have 2 spots left in the group, so if you are interested in “joining the fight” let me know, or get more information here. And check out the preview video below of Les Mills Combat.
Have a great week and stay with the fight!
